Amusing Quotations

"My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She's ninety-seven now, and we don't know where the hell she is."
Ellen DeGeneres

Welcome to Dad's Blog

This is mostly a personal record of things that I find funny about my kids and where i let off steam when they drive me crazy.  You are welcome to have a browse through as I am sure that fellow parents will identify with what I say.

For the record: Despite the dismissive comments you may see here, I love my girls and my wife to bits and would never ever, even begin to contemplate being without them for a second.

Amazing Babies

by John (the Dad) 23. July 2009 22:08

I'm back.  I haven't been blogging for a while because we have been overhauling our website.  Have a browse through, if you are a parent you will get it.

That said I would like to muse on the wonderful thing that is early human development.

As far as I understand, and please don't quote me on any of this because I might be wrong, babies instinctively know how to suckle and will generally know when to stop when full up.   Babies are less sensitive than adults because they cannot scratch an itch, cannot pick out fluff from their eyes and are bound to bang their head against pretty much everything in the house in a few months time.  Their bones aren't fully developed and are quite flexible, again, to allow for the inevitable bumps.

If our body proportions were similar to a toddler's, our heads would be about the size and weight of a medicine ball - at least.  Yet they are able not only to learn how to balance on the most unstable platforms that are those short bowed legs, but to actually walk.

With such amazing minds and bodies, there is one thing about babies and toddlers that amazes me the most: why oh why, for the love of all things small and cuddly, do they play up, cry their eyes out, go all hyperactive and drive you absolutely crazy rather than just bloody well going to bloody sleep when they are tired?

Not yet, But and Wait.

by John (the Dad) 21. May 2009 22:28

"Mara dinner time."

"But I'm not hungry and I dont want rice."

"Ok, you can have cereals then."

...an hour later.

“Mara bath time please.”

Wait, not yet.”

“Mara bath time, now."

"But I want to watch this..."

...fifteen minutes later.

"Mara time to get out now."

"Not yet, I want to play in the bath a little bit more, pleeeease."

...half an hour later.

"Mara bed time now come on."

"But wait can I have my rice now please?"

Parenting Adventures

A 4 year old and a 1 year old.

by John (the Dad) 20. May 2009 21:20

So where to start? Well Mara is 4 and Sadie is 1 and today they have been in top form. I will tell you more about them (current and past) in subsequent posts but I may as well start with today.

Today Sadie has been crying most of the day because she wouldn’t settle down for her nap. Honestly, she would cry for hours if we let her and I am starting to wonder what on earth we are going to do to try and control her, or, whether we should put her up for adoption.

Mara is going through a difficult phase in that she is having trouble dealing with the attention Sadie demands. She starts to act up without warning and gives her sister a sneaky slap on the head whenever she thinks we are not looking. Consequently she ended up in the naughty place twice in one hour.

I try to explain to Mara why she was naughty, punish her by depriving her of something she likes, and tell her I love her and that she is forgiven but as soon as she is off the hook goes off on one again.  Adoption too perhaps?

On the other hand, Sadie did babble a few funny combinations of her baby words: "bish bish tah tah" seems to be one of her current indiscernible favorite phrases. She also calls all animals wow wows (which is supposed to sound like a dog bark).

Mara did come up with an amusing if intriguing story. It seems she and her best friends have been playing at families during preschool break time today. There was a mum, a brother and a sister (Mara). It then transpires that the brother got married to another friend in a pretend wedding and they went round and round in circles.

That’s as much as I got out of her.

Anyway, it’s late and I need to chill out a bit as we can only expect another crazy day tomorrow.
