Amusing Quotations

"My theory is that all of Scottish cuisine is based on a dare."
Mike Myers

Welcome to Dad's Blog

This is mostly a personal record of things that I find funny about my kids and where i let off steam when they drive me crazy.  You are welcome to have a browse through as I am sure that fellow parents will identify with what I say.

For the record: Despite the dismissive comments you may see here, I love my girls and my wife to bits and would never ever, even begin to contemplate being without them for a second.

Getting Names Right

by John (the Dad) 21. October 2009 22:35

At the end of the summer we spent some holiday time with friends.  During that week our Sadie couldn’t quite get the hang of one of the names. She came up with all of these variations which we all found hilarious.  I’ll bet that even from this list you won’t guess it:

Aaron, aaran, adan, edan, edam (like the cheese), eyan, ayan, arun, adun, etun, atun (which happens to mean tuna in spanish) and eyan.

To throw you off even more how about these: tita and potan.  I swear this is true.

The name is Adrian!

Amazing Babies

by John (the Dad) 23. July 2009 22:08

I'm back.  I haven't been blogging for a while because we have been overhauling our website.  Have a browse through, if you are a parent you will get it.

That said I would like to muse on the wonderful thing that is early human development.

As far as I understand, and please don't quote me on any of this because I might be wrong, babies instinctively know how to suckle and will generally know when to stop when full up.   Babies are less sensitive than adults because they cannot scratch an itch, cannot pick out fluff from their eyes and are bound to bang their head against pretty much everything in the house in a few months time.  Their bones aren't fully developed and are quite flexible, again, to allow for the inevitable bumps.

If our body proportions were similar to a toddler's, our heads would be about the size and weight of a medicine ball - at least.  Yet they are able not only to learn how to balance on the most unstable platforms that are those short bowed legs, but to actually walk.

With such amazing minds and bodies, there is one thing about babies and toddlers that amazes me the most: why oh why, for the love of all things small and cuddly, do they play up, cry their eyes out, go all hyperactive and drive you absolutely crazy rather than just bloody well going to bloody sleep when they are tired?

Auntie Says

by John (the Dad) 4. June 2009 17:38

Don’t know what its like where you live but here preschool teachers are called “Auntie” by the children.  Somehow it seems that at the end of the day we teach Mara nothing at all and that according to her, Auntie is a wealth of knowledge so vast, that mere parents should be humbled in her presence.  What a tremendously perfect creation she appears to be:

“Auntie says that I have to spit the water out four times and not drink the water after brushing my teeth”…

“Auntie says that I have to colour inside the lines”…

“Auntie says I have to go to bed at eight o’clock”…

“Auntie says that I mustn’t shout”…

“Auntie says Chihuahuas have spots – sometimes”…

“Auntie says…”

But soft, what light from yonder backside breaks?
It is the sun…

An Unexpexted Present

by John (the Dad) 2. June 2009 21:19
Ok, so this is the second time I am writing this because I had just finished when I mysteriously deleted everything, just in time for an auto save.  So it’s been dad’s day today.

Let’s start with last night: I find my bookmark beside my book as opposed to inside the book. Sadie, again.

Back to today and this evening has been quite eventful. The usual tantrums aside I had a bit of scare with Mara as she over excitedly tried to jump onto her mums back who was crouching. She somehow managed to miss and smacked her nose against the coffee table. Her nostril started to bleed immediately although not too badly and she was screaming like crazy. I really thought she had broken her nose but I stopped the bleeding, put some ice on it and she settled quickly enough. About ten minutes later Sadie bumped her nose on the TV unit but no big deal because she is obviously made of rubber.

So, Sadie. I was getting her out of the bath earlier and hung her over my forearm as I prepared to wrap the towel around her when I discovered a delightful little gift emerging from her behind. Well actually it wasn’t that little but anyway, out of pure reflex I end up grabbing it in mid air as it starts to drop off. I call for Zee(my wife) to open the toilet lid for me and she understandably starts laughing her head off. So there I am, baby in one hand, trophy in the other and Zee turns and leaves me there to go get a wipe instead of opening the toilet lid.  Ah the joys of parenting.

I don’t want to leave you with such a graphic image so I’ll tell you one last thing. The girls went to the park this afternoon with their grandparents so I asked Mara if she had met any friends there. She said no and that the girls there were big girls, although one was a bit taller than her, but “she was a little bit thank you.”

No, I have no idea either.

Viva Stavros Flatley

by John (the Dad) 26. May 2009 23:38

I’m not the greatest fan of reality TV shows and a lot has been said about the subject.  I will leave that discussion to others as it has no place here, at least for now.  What I do want to say is that after a rough day these guys made me laugh.

No they are not mega-talented superstars and their act is not awe inspiring but I at least think they are hilarious.  And I mean this in a nicest possible way.  They have a charm about them that makes them inevitably adorable.

Why, you may ask, am I writing about them in a parenting blog?

Well firstly, I may be getting soppy after living in a world full of women (my wife and two daughters), but I got that warm fuzzy feeling inside when they were voted into the final and could hardly contain their excitement.

Second, because they were entertaining and most of all fun.  And this is what I am trying to do with this website: make it a fun place for parents.    We have to live through enough grief and there are plenty of sites where you can find serious discussions about parenting and kids.  This is not primarily one of those.

What I am trying to create is a place where parents can hopefully find something amusing they can relate to.

So search for Stavros Flatley on your Google or You Tube or whatever and have a laugh.

A Vision

by John (the Dad) 22. May 2009 21:38

It shall come to pass where the unnaturally over excitable and über politically correct cuddly purple, previously assumed prehistoric, creature of sinful pride, manifested in eye dazzling immaculately and orthodonticaly aligned teeth, will be destroyed by the wrath of man.

Patience has worn thin, for the incessant dance and chant of the creature is unnatural in the eyes of the maker.

And there shall be great upheaval among fathers of all nations and they shall pursue said creature with fire and pitchfork unto its doom.

It is due.

And there will be much rejoicing and men across the lands shall be merry.

Not yet, But and Wait.

by John (the Dad) 21. May 2009 22:28

"Mara dinner time."

"But I'm not hungry and I dont want rice."

"Ok, you can have cereals then."

...an hour later.

“Mara bath time please.”

Wait, not yet.”

“Mara bath time, now."

"But I want to watch this..."

...fifteen minutes later.

"Mara time to get out now."

"Not yet, I want to play in the bath a little bit more, pleeeease."

...half an hour later.

"Mara bed time now come on."

"But wait can I have my rice now please?"

Parenting Adventures

A 4 year old and a 1 year old.

by John (the Dad) 20. May 2009 21:20

So where to start? Well Mara is 4 and Sadie is 1 and today they have been in top form. I will tell you more about them (current and past) in subsequent posts but I may as well start with today.

Today Sadie has been crying most of the day because she wouldn’t settle down for her nap. Honestly, she would cry for hours if we let her and I am starting to wonder what on earth we are going to do to try and control her, or, whether we should put her up for adoption.

Mara is going through a difficult phase in that she is having trouble dealing with the attention Sadie demands. She starts to act up without warning and gives her sister a sneaky slap on the head whenever she thinks we are not looking. Consequently she ended up in the naughty place twice in one hour.

I try to explain to Mara why she was naughty, punish her by depriving her of something she likes, and tell her I love her and that she is forgiven but as soon as she is off the hook goes off on one again.  Adoption too perhaps?

On the other hand, Sadie did babble a few funny combinations of her baby words: "bish bish tah tah" seems to be one of her current indiscernible favorite phrases. She also calls all animals wow wows (which is supposed to sound like a dog bark).

Mara did come up with an amusing if intriguing story. It seems she and her best friends have been playing at families during preschool break time today. There was a mum, a brother and a sister (Mara). It then transpires that the brother got married to another friend in a pretend wedding and they went round and round in circles.

That’s as much as I got out of her.

Anyway, it’s late and I need to chill out a bit as we can only expect another crazy day tomorrow.
